In this lesson, you learned about conjugate acid-base pairs and substances that act as either acids or bases. Now, you will demonstrate your knowledge of these concepts by responding to the following prompts. Make sure that you are answering in complete sentences, and that your responses are detailed and thorough.
Consider the equation for acetic acid plus water.
CH3COOH + H2O → CH3COO– + H3O+
Refer to Figure 3.1 on page 459 (attached below) to compare the strengths of the two acids in the equation. Do the same for the two bases.
Determine which direction—forward or reverse—is favored in the reaction.
