To achieve true 3D modelling, AutoCAD uses a parametric modelling style, which means the designer can create objects, and then edit them without changing their shape. The software can also be used for 2D drafting, and it supports functions including measurements, dimensioning, solids, points, linetypes, polylines, and a full suite of 3D linetypes and surface styles.
AutoCAD was originally developed to support industrial design, and is still primarily used for this purpose. The graphical interface of AutoCAD makes it popular with amateur designers, and many software packages that support 2D CAD have AutoCAD as a pre-installed application. AutoCAD has been updated many times, and today there are many variations of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD’s development was driven by AutoCAD LT, which was originally designed for non-commercial use and available at lower price than AutoCAD. Then, the AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD 2000 product lines were combined into a single program called AutoCAD.

1995–2016: AutoCAD native programming environments
AutoCAD native C++ programming is available through the.NET API. The native C++ API, known as AutoLISP, was originally developed to work with AutoCAD 2D, but is now used with all versions of AutoCAD. The AutoLISP standard is version 1.9. As such, most of the functionality present in the.NET API is also in the AutoLISP API.
AutoLISP provides a functional language that allows access to the underlying software of the program, such as the graphics engine and database. Most control objects from the standard.NET API can be created in AutoLISP. It also allows the creation of custom objects, extension objects, which extend the functionality of native AutoCAD objects.
AutoCAD native Visual LISP programming is available with AutoCAD 2011 (and earlier) for Windows and for the AutoCAD LT program on Unix-like systems. AutoCAD native Visual LISP programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Windows. AutoCAD native Visual LISP programming is available with AutoCAD LT for macOS. AutoCAD native Visual LISP programming is available with AutoCAD LT for iOS. AutoCAD native Visual LISP programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Android.
AutoCAD native Visual Basic programming is available with AutoCAD 2011 (and earlier) for Windows and for the AutoCAD LT program on Unix-like systems. AutoCAD native Visual Basic programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Windows. AutoCAD native Visual Basic programming is available with AutoCAD LT for macOS. AutoCAD native Visual Basic programming is available with AutoCAD LT for iOS. AutoCAD native Visual Basic programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Android.
AutoCAD native C# programming is available with AutoCAD 2014 (and earlier) for Windows and for the AutoCAD LT program on Unix-like systems. AutoCAD native C# programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Windows. AutoCAD native C# programming is available with AutoCAD LT for macOS. AutoCAD native C# programming is available with AutoCAD LT for iOS. AutoCAD native C# programming is available with AutoCAD LT for Android.
AutoCAD native Java programming is available with AutoCAD 2017 for Windows and for the AutoC
If you have an Autodesk product activated, you can also go directly to the page where you registered your product: “
When you’re on the Autodesk website, you’ll notice that the links on the page point to a different website than when you first opened the website. This is normal, and it’s actually one of the security features that Autodesk uses to stop spammers. To change the website you go to when you open the Autodesk website, click the gear icon (see Figure 3-3) and select **Technical Tools & Options**. In the General tab, you’ll see a drop-down box next to **Autodesk Website**.
